Bhutan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern edge, is known for its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and dramatic landscapes that range from subtropical plains to steep mountains and valleys. Peaks such as 7,326m Jomolhari are popular trekking destinations in the High Himalayas. Paro Taktsang monastery (Tiger’s Nest) clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley.
In 2006, the fourth king of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck announced that he would abdicate in favour of a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. In 2008, the year that marked 100 years of the monarchy saw two important events; the first democratic elections and the coronation of the fifth king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
